This
is a straight up "keeping up with the Jones's ad." Oddly enough,
the advertiser labels the woman "old school" - which has a generally
positive connotation in younger circles. "Old school" refers to
purity, tradition, and "the real thing". For example, saying a rapper
is "old school" is meant as a term of honor, as it is assumed he
or she was a maverick who helped shape modern rappers. Perhaps the
term has been sufficiently distorted among the yuppie crowd, which
prides itself on being on the edge, and "in da house", technologically
speaking.
In any case, this silly old school chick thinks she's completely
accessible by her employer and anyone else who wishes for her to
do something for them. But she's really not - so the joke is on
her. This is another ad that assumes that the best societal condition
is one in which you must be connected to the rest of the world at
the fastest possible speed. Like the chick in the IBM ad, this one
looks ripe for a chip implant in her skull. All we need to do is
convince her that her life will be made "easier" and she'll
be able to buy movie tickets, conduct business, AND chat with her
friend in Hong Kong at any time of day. With multiple devices (or
inputs on her chip) she can do all of this AT THE SAME TIME. She
will luckily be in a state of constant data (and therefore financial)
transfer. Personally, we can't wait for life to be that efficient
and easy. Instead of having a body at all we can just be brains
in jars that are all connected by wireless device to enjoy the finer
things in life - like receiving great offers on new devices. |
